Application Guidelines for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2024 (Degree Programs)

The following Guideline is published based on the “Application Guidelines for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2024” announced by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation and the current regulations of Shenzhen University.


To meet the growing international demand for Chinese language teachers, facilitate Chinese language education around the world, and support the professional development of Chinese language teachers, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) has established the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (hereinafter referred to as the Scholarship) for eligible Chinese language teachers outside of China. Confucius Institutes, independent Confucius Classrooms, selected HSK test centers, foreign educational institutions, Chinese language teacher training programs/Chinese departments at foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language teaching, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (hereinafter collectively referred to as Recommending Institutions) may recommend outstanding students and in-service Chinese language teachers to further their studies in Master of International Chinese Language Education Program and Bachelor of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages Program at Shenzhen University(SZU).


Application Guide for 2024 SZU International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship is announced as follow:


I.  Eligibility

a)  Be a Non-Chinese citizen;

b)  Be friendly to China, have no criminal record, abide by the laws and regulations of China and the rules and regulations of SZU;

c)  Be in good physical and mental health, be in good academic and behavioral standing

d)  Be interested in Chinese language education and related work; and

e)  Be aged between 16 and 35 years on September 1, 2024. The maximum age limit for in-service Chinese teachers may be extended to 45, but those who apply for a scholarship for a Bachelor’s degree shall be younger than 25 under most circumstances.


II.  Scholarship Types and Qualifications

a)  For Master of International Chinese Language Education Program

The program commences in September 2024, and the scholarship is provided for a maximum of two academic years. Applicants shall hold a Bachelor’s degree, have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 5) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level). Priority will be given to applicants who may provide an employment contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.

b)  For Bachelor of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages Program

The program commences in September 2024, and the scholarship is provided for a maximum of four academic years. Applicants shall hold a senior high school diploma, have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).


III.  Scholarship Coverage and Criteria

a) The Scholarship supports tuition, accommodation, living allowance and comprehensive medical insurance.

b)  Accommodation allowance for students of Master of International Chinese Language Education Program and Bachelor of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages Program is 700 CNY per person/month based on the awarded duration of the scholarship. Students could choose to live on campus or off campus. Due to the limited vacancies of university dormitories, students who prefer to live on campus will choose the dormitory on a first-come, first-served basis and pay for the dormitory fee according to the type and charge standard of the dormitory.

c) Living allowance is granted by SZU on a monthly basis. The monthly living allowance for students of Bachelor of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages Program is 2,500 CNY per person; the monthly living allowance for students of Master of International Chinese Language Education Program is 3,000 CNY per person.

Students must register on the designated registration date stated in the Admission Notice. Otherwise, the scholarship will be revoked. Students registered before the 15th (inclusive) of the month are entitled to the full allowance of that month, while those registered after the 15th of the month are entitled to half of the amount. If a student leaves China for more than 15 days for personal reasons during the study period (excluding summer and winter vacations), his/her living allowance during the period of absence from China will be suspended. If a student is suspended or withdrawn from school for personal reasons or is subject to disciplinary action by SZU, his/her living allowance from the date of suspension, withdrawal, or notification of disciplinary action will be suspended. The living allowance for graduating students is paid until half a month after the graduation (or program completion) date set by SZU.

d) Comprehensive medical insurance is implemented in accordance with relevant regulations on overseas students stipulated by the Ministry of Education of China. Insurance fee per person is 800 CNY per year for students engaged in program longer than one academic year.

e) Degree students are subject to the annual assessment according to the Annual Assessment Procedures of the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarships. Students who fail to pass the annual review will be suspended or disqualified for the scholarship. Students who fail to register on time, fail to pass the pre-enrollment medical examination, withdraw from school before completing the program, or suspend their studies will be disqualified for the scholarship.


IV.  Application Procedure

a) Online registration will be available from March 1st to May 15th ,2024 on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website (http://www.chinese.cn). You may search for Recommending Institutions and SZU, submit application materials online and track the application process, comments and results. Awarded students should confirm application process of degree programs with SZU and should register on time according to designated date stated in the Admission Notice. (Students who apply for SZU should make a second application on the website of CIE of SZU: /en/ together with the International Chinese Teachers Scholarship Application Form as a proof for the required application fee payment.)

b) In-service Chinese language teachers need to provide proof of employment and a letter of recommendation from the employer, priority will be given to them under equal conditions.

c) Applicants who have received the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate during Chinese Bridge competitions may submit their application documents along with their scholarship certificates to SZU directly at the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website. V.  Application Documents

a) A scanned copy of passport photo page.

b) A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK tests (within the two-year validity).

c) A recommendation letter signed by the head of the recommending institution.

d) Applicants for degree programs are required to provide a certificate of the highest diploma (or proof of expected graduation) and an official transcript.

e) Applicants for Master of International Chinese Language Education Program are required to provide 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors. Priority will be given to applicants who may provide an employment contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China.

f) In-service Chinese language teachers shall provide proof of employment and a reference letter from the employer.

g) Applicants under 18 shall provide certified documents of designation signed by their entrusted legal guardians in China.

h) Applicants shall provide additional documents as required by SZU.

Documents other than Chinese or English are required to be translated and notarized.
