 NAME OF MAJOR

Biomedical Engineering (Medicine/Engineering/Sciences)

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This program will equip students with solid theoretical and systematic professional knowledge in molecular medicine, biomedical engineering, and related fields. Graduates of this program will have the opportunity to undertake independent scientific research, allowing them to understand the current status and future trends of medicine/biomedical engineering, and write and communicate in English.

MAIN RESEARCH FIELDS:

1. Biomedical information

Apply biomedical engineering techniques and methods to collect, analyze and evaluate health-related biomedical information, establish disease risk prediction and early warning models, explore the underlying reasons of disease pathogenesis, and conduct intervention studies.

2. Cell and tissue engineering

Conduct research on various types of stem cell and bioscaffold materials, and learn how to apply tissue engineering and regeneration technologies to acute and chronic injuries and diseases; conduct research using cell engineering and nanomaterial labeling technologies based on modern gene technology; perform in vivo and in vitro cell tracing and monitoring; and develop new sources of stem cells for research and industrialization amplification technologies, including the development of 3D culture and amplification and bioreactor systems.


3. Systematic Biomedical:

Harness biophysical, biochemical, bioinformatic and systems biology approaches to study human aging and major diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, metabolic diseases, and infectious diseases; use cells, tissues, organs to conduct translational medicine research into human disease mechanisms at multiple levels, and develop personalized and precise diagnostic and treatment approaches.

Frontiers in Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Image Analysis, Lecture on Pattern Recognition Front, Advanced Cell Biology and Disease, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

CAREER PROSPECTS

There is a wide spectrum of career paths that can follow from obtaining a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, including but not limited to:

Biomedical Scientist/ResearcherBiomedical scientists and researchers, in both clinical and/or research environments, conduct research that aims to improve human health by carrying out scientific tests to find solutions to medical/clinical problems. They research information that aids in the development of biomedical technology and test products so that they are safe and effective for consumers.

Biomaterials DeveloperBiomedical engineers may develop biomaterials based on either natural living tissue or artificial materials, for use in the human body. Tissue engineering, biomedical implant development, drug delivery and nano implants are all areas that a biomaterials developer may work in. Biomaterials can be used to either repair or replace lost function to the body, or to detect and image disease.

Biomedical Artificial Intelligent (AI) Researcher or Developer AI technology is rewiring many parts of society. How medical/clinical procedures and philosophies will be affected by AI is a thrilling frontier for exploration. A career in this field will involve you not only in science and technology, but also in areas of ethics, finance, and regulation.

Rehabilitation EngineerBiomedical engineers who work in a field dedicated to rehabilitation often work on diverse projects. These can range from mechanical equipment that helps patients regain the ability to walk, to virtual reality systems that aid in limb mobility. Rehabilitation engineers may also create custom solutions based on unique needs or research improvements that can form the basis of a novel rehabilitation technology.

Medical Device/Technology Developer

Medical technology can refer to the hardware and software that help manufacture medical devices, as well as to the technology that is an integral part of those devices. Medical technology professionals with biomedical engineering backgrounds may specialize in bioinstrumentation, or the use of bioelectronic/biomechanical/biochemical instruments to record or transmit physiological information in vivo and/or in vitro.

张学记,深圳大学副校长。美国医学与生物工程院院士,俄罗斯工程院外籍院士,英国皇家化学学会会士等。张学记长期从事生物传感及仪器与诊疗研究, 在分析化学领域取得了系统性创新成果。以第一完成人获全国创新争先奖一等奖、1项教育部高等学校自然科学二等奖、1项中国分析测试协会(CAIA)一等奖。在Sci. Robot.、J. Am. Chem. Soc.、Angew. Chem.、Nat. Commun.、Adv. Mater.、ACS Nano等发表SCI论文500余篇。论文他人引用超过1万次,授权发明专利100余项。受邀为Chem. Rev., Chem. Soc. Rev.撰写综述, 并出版专著8部, 应邀在国际会议做大会或邀请报告50余次。研究方向为电化学、生物分析,纳米传感,生物医药等。

Xueji Zhang is Vice President of Shenzhen University. Academician of American Academy of Medicine and Biological Engineering, Foreign Academician of Russian Academy of Engineering, Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry, etc. Zhang Xueji has long been engaged in biosensing, instrumentation, and diagnosis and treatment research, and has achieved systematic innovations in the field of analytical chemistry. He won the first prize of National Innovation Competition Award, Natural Science of Higher Education Ministry of Education, and prize of China Analytical Testing Association (CAIA). He has published more than 500 SCI papers in Sci. Robot., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem., Nat. Commun. etc. More than 100 invention patents have been authorized. Invited to write a review for Chem. Rev., Chem. Soc. Rev., and published 8 monographs, and was invited to give conferences or invited lectures at international conferences for more than 50 times. His research has centered on bioanalysis, micro/nanosensors, and biomedical instrumentation.

Professor Dong is distinguished professor of the Shenzhen University. He is the winner of National Natural Science Foundation—Outstanding Youth Foundation. He has targeted the key issue of developing nucleic acids detection and cancer diagnosis novel strategies as the main research theme, and research progresses have been achieved: (1) He made innovative contributions to detection principles and signal amplification strategies and developed several highly sensitive, multiplex or label-free electrochemical and optical DNA and miRNA analysis strategies. (2) Fabricating several multi-functional nanoprobes for cell recognition, imaging, detection and regulation of intracellular miRNA. (3) Designing a series of multifunctional novel nanomaterials-based theranostic platform for diagnosing cancer and monitoring cancer therapy effect. The applicant has published 129 SCI papers as the first or corresponding author in Nat. Commun.,Chem. Rev., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. ,Adv. Mater. etc. cited 8500 times by other scientists. He also publishes two books about the nucleic acids detection and edits one book about the bio-applications of nanomaterials. He was also awarded the second class Natural Science Prize by Education Ministry of China in 2018 (the second accomplisher) and and the first class Scientific and Technological Prize by Chinese Association for Instrumental Analysis (the second accomplisher). He is the 2020 and 2021 most cited Chinese Researcher.

杨华艳,博士,深圳大学医学部生物医学工程学院特聘教授。国家“海外高层次青年人才项目” 和国家“自然科学二等奖”获得者。 手性材料能够表现出特殊的光、电、磁等性质,近年来获得了不同学科领域的广泛关注。当前从原子水平上揭示手性无机功能材料的手性起源,实现可控构筑功能手性纳米材料,并进一步研究其相关性能及构效关系,探索其在各个领域中的应用,具有重要的理论和实用意义。目前本课题组的研究领域主要集中在可控合成手性无机纳米团簇手性纳米颗粒、表征其原子精确结构从而揭示手性无机纳米材料的手性起源研究其相关物理化性能的研究,及其在生物医用检测、手性药物分离、不对称催化等领域中应用。

Huayan Yang, PhD, is a distinguished professor in the school of biomedical engineering, health scienc center, Shenzhen University. She had been awkward the Second Prize of National Natural Science. Chiral materials have gained a lot of attention from different disciplines in recent years as their special properties, such as optical, electrical and magnetic, and their distiguished applications in many field. Revealing the origin of chirality at the atomic level is the key factor to the controlled construction of functional chiral nanomaterials, and to further investigate their related properties and conformational relationships. The research interestings in our group are the controlled synthesis of chiral inorganic nanoclusters and chiral nanoparticles by characterizing  their atomically precise structures and revealing their chiral origins. Further studing their related physical and chemical properties and exploring their applications in biomedical detection, chiral drug separation, asymmetric catalysis are also our research interestings.

  博士,助理教授,硕士生导师,深圳市海外高层次人才, 生物医学工程学院体外诊断系特聘副研究员。2015-2020年于北京科技大学化生学院生物传感中心任教,期间2016-2017赴加拿大阿尔伯塔大学进行博士后研究工作,2020年加入深圳大学。主要从事金属凝聚态团簇和三维有机金属分子的构筑、构效关系研究、化学生物组装行为以及在肿瘤等疾病标志物检测、药物开发和控释、智能传感等健康相关场景应用。已经发表SCI论文40余篇,其中以第一/通讯作者身份发表SCI论文30余篇,TOP期刊18篇,发表在Small、Anal. Tong Shu is an assistant professor at Shenzhen University, China. He received his B.S. (2010) and Ph.D. (2015) in biotechnology and analytical chemistry, respectively, from the University of Science and Technology Beijing, China. He completed his post-doctoral studies at the University of Alberta, Canada (2016–2017). Afterward, he worked in Research Center for Bioengineering and Sensing Technology, University of Science and Technology Beijing, China as an assistant professor (2017–2020). In 2020, he joined the School of Biomedical Engineering, Shenzhen University Medical School, Shenzhen University, China. His current work involves molecular-like luminescent nanomaterials and stimuli-responsive precise frame polymers and their applications in biosensing and biomedicine.

Prof. Yongdong Jin obtained his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry of the CAS, CIAC) in China in 2004. He did his postdoctoral work at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel in 2004-2006, at UCLA in 2006-2007, and at Department of Bioengineering of the UW-Seattle in 2007-2010. After being 13 years of Professor of Chemistry at the State Key Lab. of Electroanalytical Chemistry, CIAC, he is presently distinguished professor at School of Biomedical Engineering, Shenzhen University. His research interests include plasmonic nanostructures for sensing, bio/nano interfaces and nanomedicine, ECL and electrostimulation for cancer treatment. He has authored more than 140 papers in international journals, including Nat. Nanotechnol., Nat. Commun., JACS, Adv. Mater., Natl. Sci. Rev., etc. He was recently elected to be IAAM fellow (2020), Vebleo fellow (2021) and Full Member of Sigma Xi (2022).
